Last summer, I had the absolute joy of capturing a family session at Fishers Hill Battlefield outside of Strasburg.. It was one of those days that remind me why I love what I do so much. The warm sunlight, the gentle breeze, and the rich history of the Northern Shenandoah Valley all came together to create a perfect backdrop for some truly heartfelt moments. I enjoy posting look backs like this because they let me relive those special times and share the magic with you. Be sure to read to the end to see a selection of my favorite images.

Why Fishers Hill Battlefield is a Perfect Spot for Family Photos

If you’re looking for a location that combines natural beauty with a touch of history, Fishers Hill Battlefield is a gem. The wide-open fields and rolling hills provide a stunning canvas for photos. Plus, the historical significance adds a layer of depth and meaning to your session. Families love how the peaceful surroundings help everyone relax and be themselves, which always makes for the best pictures.

One of the things I noticed during this session was how the kids ran freely across the grass, their laughter echoing through the trees. It’s moments like these that make outdoor sessions so special. The battlefield isn’t just a place frozen in time; it’s alive with stories and memories, and it invites families to create their own.

Capturing Genuine Emotion in Every Frame

When I photograph families, my goal is always to capture genuine emotion. It’s not about stiff poses or forced smiles. Instead, I encourage everyone to interact naturally - whether that’s a playful tickle fight, a quiet moment of holding hands, or a shared laugh over a silly joke. At Fishers Hill, the relaxed atmosphere made this so easy.

During this session, I remember a moment when the parents shared a quiet glance while their kids explored nearby. That simple exchange spoke volumes about their connection and love. Moments like these are why I treasure look backs - they remind me of the real stories behind the photos.

Tips for Planning Your Own Family Session Outdoors

Planning a family photo session can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some practical tips to help you get the most out of your outdoor session, especially if you’re considering a place like Fishers Hill Battlefield:

  • Choose the right time of day: Early morning or late afternoon light is soft and flattering. It also tends to be less crowded.

  • Dress comfortably and coordinate colors: Avoid overly matching outfits. Instead, pick a color palette that complements the natural surroundings.

  • Bring props or meaningful items: A favorite blanket, a book, or even a picnic setup can add personality to your photos.

  • Plan for breaks: Kids especially need time to recharge. Short breaks keep everyone happy and engaged.

  • Trust your photographer: Let them guide you through poses and moments. Their experience will make the session flow smoothly.

These tips helped make the Fishers Hill session a breeze, and I’m confident they’ll help you too!

Why I Love Posting Look Backs

There’s something incredibly special about looking back on past sessions. It’s like opening a time capsule filled with laughter, love, and growth. When I post look backs, I get to share those beautiful memories with you and celebrate the journey families are on.

For me, every family session is a story unfolding. Seeing how children grow, how relationships deepen, and how moments become memories is truly heartwarming. Plus, it’s a reminder that life’s precious moments deserve to be captured and cherished.
