Balancing the Lens and the Deadline: How I Juggle Journalism and Photography

Most people have one career they’re passionate about. I’m lucky, and sometimes a little overwhelmed, to have two. By day, I work full-time as a journalist, chasing stories, meeting deadlines, and telling the truth as clearly as I can. But when the notebook closes, I pick up my camera. Photography is my second job, but also a deep personal passion. Balancing both roles isn’t always easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A hand writing, research a story.

Why I Chose Both

Journalism was my first love; words, stories, facts, and the power they hold. But over time, I realized that some stories can't be told with words alone. Photography lets me capture emotion, mood, and fleeting moments in ways that writing sometimes can’t. It started as a hobby, grew into a creative outlet, and eventually became part of my professional identity.

The Challenge of Balance

Time is the biggest challenge. Journalism is demanding and fast-paced, often leaving little room to breathe. Photography, while deeply rewarding, also requires time: editing, shooting, planning. I’ve had weekends with back-to-back shoots and weeknights where I’m transcribing interviews well past dinner. I’ve had to learn to say no, to schedule wisely, and to remind myself that rest is not optional.

What Each Teaches Me About the Other

These two worlds aren’t as separate as they seem. Journalism has taught me how to frame a narrative; something that shapes my approach to visual storytelling. Photography, in turn, has sharpened my eye for detail and composition, even when I’m writing. One feeds the other creatively, and both keep me curious and connected to the world around me.

Why I Keep Doing Both

There are days when I ask myself if I’m doing too much. But then there are those perfect moments; a portrait that captures someone’s essence, an article that sparks real conversation, that remind me why I do this. I don’t do it for the hustle. I do it because both journalism and photography help me understand people, tell their stories, and express what I care about.

Final Thoughts

Balancing two creative careers is a constant negotiation of time, energy, and heart. But I’ve come to see it not as a burden, but a blessing. If you’re someone who loves more than one thing, know this: you don’t have to choose. You just have to be intentional, patient, and honest with yourself. And remember why you started.
